appétit

appetite

noun ah-peh-TEE Less Common

Origin: Latin appetitus

Usage Note

Appétit appears in the ubiquitous French greeting bon appétit, said before a meal — equivalent to 'enjoy your meal'. The final 't' is always silent. The phrase avoir un bon appétit means to have a healthy appetite. Figuratively, appétit extends to any strong desire (un appétit de pouvoir — a hunger for power), much like its English cognate.
