Mathématique is used as both a singular adjective (un raisonnement mathématique) and as a noun. As a noun it is almost always plural — les mathématiques or informally les maths — to refer to the school subject or field. The singular la mathématique is used in philosophy to refer to the discipline as a whole. The colloquial abbreviation is les maths.
