Magistrature refers collectively to the body of magistrates or to the judicial function itself — entrer dans la magistrature means to join the judiciary as a career. In France the magistrature debout (standing magistracy) refers to prosecutors, while magistrature assise (seated magistracy) refers to judges. The term also extends to any high civil office: la magistrature suprême is the presidency.
