Méduse takes its name from the Gorgon Medusa of Greek mythology, whose hair of snakes suggested the creature's tentacles. In French the word is used for jellyfish as well as for the mythological figure (capitalised: Méduse). The verb méduser means to stupefy or dumbfound someone: il était médusé — he was dumbstruck.
