Usage Note

Louer covers both renting (as tenant) and renting out (as landlord) — context distinguishes which direction: louer un appartement can mean to rent or to let a flat. It also carries the distinct literary sense of praising someone, as in Dieu soit loué ('God be praised'), from Latin laudare.
