Lacération is a medical term for a deep, irregular tear in tissue, more serious than a simple cut (une coupure). The verb is lacérer (to lacerate, to slash). Outside medicine it can describe slashing or tearing of fabric or paper. The plural des lacérations is common in emergency medical reports.
