lacs
snare, trap (archaic)
noun LAH Rare
Origin: Latin 'laqueus' (noose)
Usage Note
Lacs (always written with a final 's', which is silent) is an archaic or literary word for a snare or noose used to catch animals. It survives mainly in the expression tomber dans les lacs de quelqu'un ('to fall into someone's trap'). Do not confuse with lacs as the plural of lac ('lake') — they are spelled identically but the trap sense is singular with an invariable 's'.
Examples
"L'oiseau s'était pris dans le lacs."
Natural Translation
The bird had been caught in the snare.
