Usage Note
Institution covers both an established organization (une institution publique — a public institution) and the act or fact of establishing something (l'institution du mariage). Colloquially, a person or place that is a long-standing fixture can be called une institution: Ce café est une institution dans le quartier. The plural les institutions often refers to the organs of the French state.
