inquiéter

to worry

verb an-kyay-TAY Common

Also means

to trouble

Usage Note

Inquiéter is transitive (something worries you), but the reflexive s'inquiéter is the everyday form meaning 'to worry' or 'to be anxious'. Ne t'inquiète pas (don't worry) is one of the most common reassurances in French. The related noun inquiétude (worry, unease) is also high-frequency. The accent on é shifts in some conjugations: il s'inquiète.

Examples

"Ne t'inquiète pas, tout va bien."

Natural Translation

Don't worry, everything is fine.

Literal Translation

Don't yourself-worry, all goes well.
