Usage Note
Infliger is typically followed by à plus a person: infliger une punition à quelqu'un ('to inflict a punishment on someone'). It can also be used reflexively or colloquially — s'infliger something means to put oneself through an unpleasant experience. The spelling change (g→ge before a and o) follows standard French orthography.
