Hachis is the culinary term for any minced or chopped preparation; the most famous dish is hachis Parmentier, France's equivalent of shepherd's pie. The final s is always silent and the word is invariable — you say du hachis and des hachis identically. The related verb hacher and noun hachoir (mincer) share the same root.
