Usage Note
Gratis is slightly more emphatic or old-fashioned than gratuitement. In everyday speech both are used, but gratis has a slightly ironic or emphatic flavour: c'est pas gratis ('nothing's free'). It can also function as an invariable adjective: l'entrée est gratis.
