gratis

free of charge

adverb grah-TEES Rare

Origin: Latin gratis, contraction of gratiis 'out of favour'

for free

Usage Note

Gratis is slightly more emphatic or old-fashioned than gratuitement. In everyday speech both are used, but gratis has a slightly ironic or emphatic flavour: c'est pas gratis ('nothing's free'). It can also function as an invariable adjective: l'entrée est gratis.
