Usage Note
Grands-parents is always plural; there is no standard singular compound (grand-parent exists but is rare). Note the hyphen and the agreement: les grands-parents maternels vs paternels. Each member of the pair has its own word: grand-père (grandfather) and grand-mère (grandmother). The final '-s' of grands and '-s' of parents are both silent.
Examples
"Mes grands-parents habitent à la campagne."
Natural Translation
My grandparents live in the countryside.
