gendre
son-in-law
noun ZHAHN-druh Rare
Origin: From Old French, Latin 'generum'.
Usage Note
Gendre means specifically a daughter's husband. There is no separate feminine equivalent — the husband has a belle-mère (mother-in-law) and beau-père (father-in-law), while his wife's parents call him their gendre. Beau-fils is a synonym (and also means stepson, which can cause ambiguity).
Examples
"Leur gendre est médecin à Lyon."
Natural Translation
Their son-in-law is a doctor in Lyon.
