Usage Note

Foncé describes a deep or dark shade of a colour and follows the noun it modifies: bleu foncé, vert foncé. When used after a colour adjective it is invariable (des robes bleu foncé). Its antonym is clair ('light'). The verb foncer means both 'to darken (a colour)' and colloquially 'to rush forward'.
