fieffé

out-and-out, arrant, thoroughgoing

adjective fyeh-FEH Rare

Origin: From fief (feudal estate) — originally 'enfeoffed,' hence thoroughly invested in a quality.

Usage Note

Fieffé is always used before the noun it modifies and always in a pejorative sense: un fieffé menteur is an out-and-out liar, un fieffé coquin an arrant rogue. It has no positive use. The feminine form is fieffée. It is a literary or stylised register word rarely heard in everyday conversation.

Examples
