face

face, side

noun FAS Common

Usage Note

Face is key in several expressions: en face de means 'opposite' or 'facing', face à face is a face-to-face encounter, and faire face à means 'to face up to' a challenge. It differs from visage (the human face as a physical feature) — face is more about the orientation or side of something.
