Extorsion in French law (extorsion de fonds) is the crime of obtaining money or property through coercion or threats, distinct from chantage (blackmail, which relies on threats of exposure). The adjective extorsionnaire exists but is rare; practitioners more often use the phrase acte d'extorsion. It is a serious criminal offence under the French Penal Code.
