engloutir

to swallow up, to engulf

verb ahn-gloo-TEER Rare

Also means

to gulp down (food)

Usage Note

Engloutir vividly describes something being swallowed whole — a ship engloutie by the sea, or a person wolfing down food. It is an irregular -ir verb conjugated like finir but carries a stronger, more dramatic register than avaler (to swallow). The past participle englouti is common in literary descriptions of disasters.

Examples

"La mer a englouti le navire en quelques minutes."

Natural Translation

The sea swallowed the ship in a few minutes.
