divinité

deity, divinity

noun dee-vee-nee-TEH Rare

Origin: Latin 'divinitas', divine nature

Usage Note

Divinité refers to a god or divine being (une divinité grecque) and also to the abstract quality of being divine. It is more literary than un dieu for a specific god. The adjective divin/divine shares the root, as does divination (fortune-telling).
