Crasseux derives from crasse (dirt, grime) and carries a strong sense of entrenched, repellent dirtiness — more intense than sale (dirty). The feminine form is crasseuse. It can also be used figuratively to describe someone mean or stingy, as in un individu crasseux suggesting moral as well as physical filth.
