Usage Note
Convier is slightly more formal than inviter and often implies a gracious or ceremonial invitation (convier à un dîner — to invite to a dinner). It can also introduce someone to a broader idea or activity (convier à la réflexion — to invite reflection). The noun form is convive (a dinner guest), not convié.
