Usage Note
Chaussette refers to a short sock (ankle to calf length), as opposed to un bas (stocking). The plural les chaussettes is the everyday term for a pair of socks. A common learner trap: une chaussure is a shoe, so chaussette literally contains the same root (chausser = to put on footwear).
