Usage Note
Broche has two distinct uses: in jewellery it is a decorative brooch pinned to clothing, and in cooking it is a metal skewer or rotisserie spit (poulet à la broche = spit-roasted chicken). The verb brocher means to stitch or brocade. The knitting needle sense (aiguille à tricoter) is regional.
