Usage Note
Appartenir is conjugated like tenir and is always followed by à (appartenir à quelqu'un — 'to belong to someone'). It should not be confused with appartement (apartment), though both share the root idea of 'pertaining to' a place or person. The formal phrase il appartient à can also mean 'it is the responsibility of', common in official documents.
