to elevate to a status
Usage Note
Ériger is a formal verb used for raising monuments or buildings and, figuratively, for elevating something to a higher status — ériger en principe means 'to raise to a principle'. The spelling change (g -> ge before a/o) follows the same pattern as manger and plonger. It is rarely used in everyday speech.
