Usage Note
Vortex is used in both scientific contexts (fluid dynamics, meteorology) and figuratively for any powerful, spiralling force — un vortex d'émotions. The word is invariable: the plural is also vortex (no -s added since it already ends in -x). It is a direct borrowing from Latin, where it meant a whirlpool or eddy.
Examples
"Le vortex aspira tout sur son passage."
Natural Translation
The vortex sucked in everything in its path.
