ultime
ultimate, final
adjective ool-TEEM Rare
Origin: From Latin ultimus (last, furthest).
Usage Note
Ultime is a formal or literary synonym for dernier when emphasising finality or irreversibility — l'ultime chance, l'ultime sacrifice. It does not change form for gender. In everyday speech, dernier is more common; ultime adds a weightier, more definitive tone.
Examples
"C'était son ultime espoir."
Natural Translation
It was his last hope.
