Usage Note
Tunnel is used both literally (road, rail, underground) and figuratively. Voir le bout du tunnel ('to see the light at the end of the tunnel') means to see an end to a difficult situation. The famous Tunnel sous la Manche (Channel Tunnel) is often called le tunnel or informally l'Eurotunnel.
