Usage Note

Tsar entered French from Russian, which took it from Old Church Slavonic tsĭsarĭ, itself a borrowing of Latin Caesar. In modern French it also appears in the informal sense of a powerful official or authority figure — le tsar du numérique ('the digital czar'). Both spellings tsar and tzar are accepted in French.
