Usage Note
Transe denotes an altered, semi-conscious state, whether induced by ritual, ecstasy, or music. The plural transes also means acute anxiety or dread in set phrases such as être dans les transes (to be in agony/dread of something). This double meaning (trance vs. anxiety) is a false friend for English speakers expecting only the spiritual sense.
Examples
"Le chaman est entré en transe pendant la cérémonie."
Natural Translation
The shaman entered a trance during the ceremony.
