Usage Note

Tourmenter describes persistent mental or physical torment — doubts, guilt, or pain that will not leave someone alone. The reflexive se tourmenter means to worry or fret obsessively, and is common in everyday speech: ne te tourmente pas pour ça ('don't torment yourself over that'). The noun tourment ('torment, anguish') shares the same root.
