Usage Note

Tir covers shooting in sport (tir à l'arc — archery), gunfire, and a shot in football/soccer (un tir au but — a penalty shot). A shooting range is a stand de tir. The verb is tirer ('to shoot' or 'to pull'). In football commentary tir and frappe are often used interchangeably for a shot on goal.
