taulard

convict, jailbird

noun toh-LAR Rare

Usage Note

Taulard (also spelled tôlard) is argot for a prisoner or ex-convict, derived from taule/tôle (slang for prison). It is informal and mildly derogatory. The feminine form is taularde. The word taule itself also means a sheet of metal, giving a sense of the cold, hard origin of the prison metaphor.

Examples

"Ce taulard vient de sortir de prison."

Natural Translation

This jailbird has just been released from prison.
