supporter

to bear, to stand

verb soo-por-TEH Less Common

Also means

to support, to hold up

Usage Note

Supporter is a false friend: its everyday meaning is to bear, tolerate, or endure something unpleasant, not to back or help (that sense is soutenir). Je ne peux pas le supporter means 'I can't stand him'. It does also describe being a fan of a sports team (un supporter is a supporter) and physically holding up a structure.

Examples

"Elle ne supporte pas le bruit."

Natural Translation

She can't stand the noise.

Literal Translation

She not supports the noise
