Usage Note

Superstition is a near-cognate of the English word and understood immediately. The related adjective is superstitieux/superstitieuse (il est très superstitieux — he is very superstitious). Common French superstitions include toucher du bois (touch wood) and the belief that the number 13 at a dinner table brings bad luck — guests added to avoid it are called quatorzièmes.
