Usage Note
Ski refers both to the physical ski and to the sport of skiing. Faire du ski means 'to go skiing'; ski alpin is downhill skiing; ski de fond is cross-country skiing. The word is borrowed from Norwegian. France's Alps and Pyrenees make skiing a culturally significant activity, and aller au ski is the common informal phrase for a ski holiday.
