Second (masculine, seconde feminine) is used for the second of exactly two items, while deuxième is preferred when there are three or more — a distinction careful speakers maintain, though colloquially they overlap. Une seconde also means a second of time. In French school, la seconde is the first year of the lycée, equivalent to Year 11 in the UK.
