Usage Note

Sec (feminine sèche) describes dryness of weather, skin, food, or tone. Vin sec is a dry wine as opposed to vin doux. In speech, a ton sec describes a curt, clipped manner. The adverbial phrase à sec means bone dry or, informally, flat broke (je suis à sec).
