Réveil shares its root with the verb réveiller ('to wake someone up') and the reflexive se réveiller ('to wake up'). The compound réveil-matin is an older term for alarm clock. Le réveil can also mean the moment or experience of waking (un réveil difficile, 'a hard awakening').
