Rugir is used for the roar of large cats (lions, tigers) and, by extension, of thunder, engines, or an angry crowd. It is a regular -ir verb. The related noun is rugissement (a roar), and the image of a roaring lion (lion rugissant) is a common heraldic and literary motif in French.
