Usage Note

Rubrique originally referred to a heading written in red ink in medieval manuscripts. Today it most commonly means a column or regular section in a newspaper (la rubrique culture) or a category in a form or database. This gives the word a slightly bureaucratic or journalistic flavour, unlike the English 'rubric' which mainly denotes a scoring guide.
