Usage Note
Rocher denotes a large rock or rocky outcrop, distinct from pierre (stone, smaller) or roc (bedrock). Le Rocher de Monaco is the famous rock promontory on which the palace stands. The adjective rocheux ('rocky') derives from it, as in les montagnes Rocheuses ('the Rocky Mountains').
