rider

to wrinkle; to crease

verb ree-DEH Rare

Usage Note

Rider means to create wrinkles or ripples on a surface — rider la peau (to wrinkle the skin) or le vent ride l'eau (the wind ripples the water). It is not slang for 'to ride' (that is chevaucher or monter). The reflexive se rider means to become wrinkled with age. The noun une ride means a wrinkle or ripple, and ridé is the adjective meaning wrinkled.

Examples

"Le vent ride la surface du lac."

Natural Translation

The wind ripples the surface of the lake.
