buyout, repurchase

noun rah-SHAH Rare

Also means

redemption, atonement

Usage Note

Rachat covers two quite distinct domains. In finance it means a buyout or buy-back (rachat d'entreprise, company buyout; rachat d'actions, share buyback). In a religious or moral sense it means redemption or atonement — le rachat de ses péchés ('the redemption of one's sins'). The verb is racheter ('to buy back' or 'to redeem oneself'); se racheter is the reflexive form meaning 'to make amends'.
