résigner

to resign (oneself)

verb reh-zee-NYAY Rare

Origin: Latin 'resignare' (to unseal, give back)

Usage Note

Résigner is almost always used reflexively as se résigner à — to resign oneself to something, to accept it reluctantly. Using it non-reflexively (to resign from a post) is formal and rare; the more common word for quitting a job is démissionner.

Examples

Natural Translation

He had to resign himself to leaving.
