place

square, place, seat

noun PLAS Common

Also means

room, space

Usage Note

Place is a false friend for English speakers: it rarely means 'place' in the abstract sense — use endroit or lieu for that. Place means a town square (la place de la République), a seat in a theater or transport, or available space (il n'y a plus de place = 'there's no room left'). À ta place means 'in your position/shoes.'

Examples

"Gardez ma place, s'il vous plaît."

Natural Translation

Please hold my seat.

Literal Translation

Guard my place, if-it-you pleases
