Usage Note
Palier is primarily the landing or platform between flights of stairs in a building. Neighbours who share a landing are called voisins de palier. Figuratively, un palier describes a plateau or level reached — as in atteindre un palier in a learning curve or price graph. The word should not be confused with pallier (to compensate for), which is a verb.
