pâtir

to suffer (from), to be harmed (by)

verb pah-TEER Rare

Origin: From Latin 'pati' (to suffer).

Usage Note

Pâtir is used with the preposition de to indicate what causes the suffering: pâtir des conséquences (to suffer the consequences), pâtir du froid (to suffer from the cold). It is a regular second-conjugation (-ir) verb but is more literary than souffrir. The noun patient shares the same Latin root.
