Nouvel is the masculine singular form of nouveau used before words starting with a vowel or silent h — for example, un nouvel appartement. The standard masculine form is nouveau, feminine is nouvelle. This pre-vowel liaison form follows the same pattern as bel/beau and vieil/vieux.
